Defending the Big Blind: The Hands You Should Fold

You are allowed to fold the big blind. The money already posted is sunk, and a discounted call is still bad when the hand cannot realize enough equity out of position.

By Ed Reif · The Poker Lobotomy

LEAKDefending weak hands simply because you already have one big blind invested.
RULEThe blind is sunk cost. Defend because the hand and price are profitable, not because folding feels wasteful.
BETTER DECISIONConsider opener position, raise size, your hand’s equity realization, rake, and postflop disadvantage before continuing.

Why this matters

The big blind receives better immediate pot odds than other seats, so it should defend wider. But wider does not mean anything. Many hands realize equity poorly when they must act first on future streets.

The psychological trap is treating the posted blind as something to rescue. It cannot be rescued. The only question is whether putting more chips in now creates a profitable future decision tree.

Fast example

Facing a raise with a weak offsuit hand, the call may look cheap because one blind is already posted. But if the hand is frequently dominated and difficult to play out of position, the discount can still buy a losing situation.

THE REWIREThe blind is sunk cost. Defend because the hand and price are profitable, not because folding feels wasteful.
One leak. One hand. One rule. One better decision.
