Dry vs Wet Poker Boards: Read Texture Before Betting
Dry Boards vs. Wet Boards
Board texture predicts how stable the current hand strengths are. Dry boards offer fewer draws; wet boards create more ways for ranges to improve or overtake each other.
Why this matters
A K-7-2 rainbow flop contains far fewer immediate straight and flush possibilities than J-T-9 with two cards of one suit. That difference changes how many hands can continue, how vulnerable one pair is, and how urgently value hands may need protection.
Texture also changes bluffing. Dry boards can favor small range bets because many hands simply missed. Wet boards create more credible continues and raises, so large automatic bets can collide with strong equity.
Fast example
Top pair on a dry ace-high board may remain top pair across many turns. Top pair on a coordinated two-tone board can face straights, flushes, pair-plus-draws, and numerous dangerous turn cards. Same hand class, different environment.
