Poker Bet-Sizing Tells: Treat Deviations as Data

The Sizing Tell

When a player suddenly changes size, something changed. The useful question is not “what does this always mean?” but “what new information does this deviation add?”

By Ed Reif · The Poker Lobotomy

LEAKTreating a single unusual bet size as a guaranteed strength or weakness tell.
RULEDeviation is data, not certainty.
BETTER DECISIONCompare the new size with the player’s baseline, the board, the range interaction, and previous showdowns before adjusting.

Why this matters

Bet sizing carries information because players choose amounts for reasons—even when those reasons are inconsistent. A recreational player who suddenly overbets may be polarized, excited, bluffing, or simply making a mistake. The deviation matters, but its meaning must be inferred.

The strongest reads accumulate evidence. Observe what size is normal, what hands were shown after previous deviations, and whether the current board gives a strategic reason for the change.

Fast example

An opponent who has used half-pot bets all night suddenly bets 1.5 times the pot on the river. Do not auto-fold or auto-call. Record the deviation, examine which value hands and bluffs fit, and let the sizing move your probability—not replace it.

One leak. One hand. One rule. One better decision.
