Should You Call With Pocket Fours? The 10:1 Rule

Should You Call With Pocket Fours? The 10:1 Rule

Set mining is not “call because I have a pocket pair.” It is an implied-odds decision: the effective stacks must be deep enough to pay for the many times you miss.

By Ed Reif · The Poker Lobotomy

LEAKCalling preflop with small pairs when the remaining stacks cannot repay the misses.
RULELook for roughly 10 times the call amount in realistic effective-stack payoff as a practical baseline.
BETTER DECISIONSet mine when position, opponent tendencies, and effective stacks create enough upside; fold when the economics are too shallow.

Why this matters

A pocket pair will miss a set on the flop most of the time. That means the winning occasions have to compensate for repeated preflop calls that produce no set and often no profitable continuation.

The 10:1 idea is a practical screen, not a guarantee. Even deep stacks are useless if the opponent rarely pays off, and position matters because realizing value is easier when you act later.

Fast example

If calling requires 5 big blinds but only 25 big blinds remain effective, the upside is usually too shallow for pure set mining. If 60 or more big blinds remain and the opponent can pay off strong postflop hands, the economics become more credible.
