You're Building a Pot Someone Else Will Win
You're Building a Pot Someone Else Will Win
Every chip you add to a multi-way pot increases the prize for every player still in the hand. Build the pot when your hand or range earns it—not because action feels productive.
Why this matters
Aggression is valuable when it creates folds, extracts value, denies equity, or improves your strategic position. In a crowded pot, a bet can fail all four jobs: several players call, stronger ranges remain, and your marginal hand now has to navigate a larger pot.
Pot growth should be intentional. Strong value hands often want more money in. Vulnerable or medium-strength hands may prefer control, especially when the field contains multiple ranges that can improve.
Fast example
You hold a marginal top pair in a four-way pot and bet large into several players. If worse hands fold and better hands plus strong draws continue, you have enlarged the pot while filtering the field against yourself. Ask who the bigger pot is actually helping.
